Sherlock was my first crush I guess. Even now I simply cannot be objective on any level in regards to this character. It's probably a good thing I moved on to the Man From U.

Well, maybe not. One sentence until I turn up with a more powerful review : One sentence until I turn up with a more powerful review I don't know if anyone else does this, but in times of stress or when I have exceptional trouble falling asleep, I find myself re-reading a favorite book.

Lately this book has been the Complete Sherlock Holmes. What amazes me the most about these stories is that, despite having read through the entire collection a number of times, I seem to find someth I don't know if anyone else does this, but in times of stress or when I have exceptional trouble falling asleep, I find myself re-reading a favorite book.

What amazes me the most about these stories is that, despite having read through the entire collection a number of times, I seem to find something new each time I read it.

Knowing the solution to the mysteries, doesn't seem to diminish the excitement at getting to Holmes' big reveal each time. The characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr.

Watson become character studies, making you long for the little tidbits that provide more insight into their inner workings. This time around I took the time to look up some of the odder Victorian words and thereby expanded my vocabulary with words like shaw a small wood or thicket , chandler a retailer of provisions and extravasate to force out from the proper vessels, as blood, so as to diffuse through the surrounding tissues.

There are other details that seem impossible to not notice: the fact that, despite Holmes and Watson being clearly hetersexual, their relationship is nevertheless odd, that Holmes was a high-functioning autistic Asperger's, my guess , and that Watson was a terrible doctor, seeing as how he treated every patient with brandy regardless of their ailment.

But it is indeed these quirks that make the characters seem more real, and make the tales and deductions that much more enjoyable.

Until I got Sherlocked. I do list each story and my rating individually, as well as my average rating for each collection. It had its ups and downs, but overall I really enjoyed my time reading this massive bind up of the entire series.

My impression of what a Sherlock Holmes' story is actually like. I came down to breakfast one morning to find my dear friend, Sherlock Holmes disembowelling a gerbil with a teaspoon.

Holmes is a prick and Watson is a sycophant. The theory of deductive is bobbins and I feel genuinely sorry for Lestrade.

And I enjoy the hell out of it. Maybe precisely because it is completely stupid. Aug 16, Aishu Rehman rated it liked it Shelves: ar-conan-doyle.

Most of the stories are similar to one another, but it was nice to read about old England. In my opinion the novels are better than the shorts since Doyle had the opportunity to expand the story into other areas which gave depth and breadth to the stories.

I love, LOVE the sherlock Holmes books. Re-read several times. Including characters like Mycroft, Dr Watson, inpector Mr Lestrad and Moriarty.

Phew… I finished this whole thing in twelve days except for The Hound of the Baskervilles which I had read before. The focus, precision and energy of the stories kept me alert throughout and I never tired.

As soon as I finished a story I was immediately hungry for more. I think the stories actually gained something by being consumed in succession in a short time.

It made me aware of the structure of the stories, about similarities Phew… I finished this whole thing in twelve days except for The Hound of the Baskervilles which I had read before.

It made me aware of the structure of the stories, about similarities and patterns, and also about the relation between the original stories and the multitude of adaptations out there.

Inevitably you come to these stories with a lot of preconceptions. What struck me the most was how close many of the adaptations are to the original stories.

After all, Holmes has some real swashbuckling potential as both an able fencer and a boxer, this is contradicted, though, by his view of himself as a brain, the rest being mere appendix.

This book is nothing short of brilliant. Arthur Conan Doyle is a master writer; there never was a dull moment in every story, and there are only a handful of characters that I would love as dearly as I love Sherlock and Watson.

I love Sherlock, and it was great to finally read the collection all the way through. Aug 07, Edalma rated it it was amazing.

This book is very very amazing. Jun 05, Jordan Bailey rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites. What first got me hooked on reading.

And I've never looked back. Hands down my favorite reads ever. I had already read it but I must have read again, because the cover wore off.

I tucked the front and back piece of the cover in the back of the book, and that's how I know it was this edition. I loved Sherlock Holmes.

I own a Sherlock Holmes sweatshirt at this very time. Added after I saw one of my friends was going to read Sherlock Holmes.

I see G Jan. I see Goodreads is showing an ISBN for this edition. It must have been added later. Who knew? His creator had him say, "It will be cold and bitter, Watson, and a good many of us may wither before its blast.

But it's God's own wind none the less, and a cleaner, better, stronger land will lie in the sunshine when the storm has cleared" The Last Bow.

Who he was kidding? He was in front of the great SH! And so in front of him actually is Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein, Grand Duke of Cassel Felstein, and hereditary King of Bohemia.

The man now agrees and starts to build his case. Watson asking him to look up for an Irene Adler. Doctor gives the biography to SH and here it goes.

Born in New Jersey in the year La Scala, hum! Prima donna Imperial Opera of Warsaw—yes! Retired from operatic stage—ha!

Living in London—quite so! Your Majesty, as I understand, became entangled with this young person, wrote her some compromising letters, and is now desirous of getting those letters back.

If this young person should produce her letters for blackmailing or other purposes, how is she to prove their authenticity?

That is very bad! Your Majesty has indeed committed an indiscretion. In the United States, all works published before are in the public domain, but as ten Holmes stories were published after that date, the Conan Doyle estate maintained that the Holmes and Watson characters as a whole were still under copyright.

Klinger lawyer and editor of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes filed a declaratory judgement suit against the Conan Doyle estate asking the court to acknowledge that the characters of Holmes and Watson were public domain in the U.

The court ruled in Klinger's favour on 23 December, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed its decision on 16 June The case was appealed to the U.

Supreme Court , which declined to hear the case, letting the appeals court's ruling stand. This resulted in the characters from the Holmes stories, along with all but ten of the stories themselves, being in the public domain in the U.

The stories still under copyright due to the ruling, as of that time, were those collected in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes other than "The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" and " The Problem of Thor Bridge ".

The remaining ten Holmes stories were to enter the U. Though the United States court ruling and the passage of time has meant that most of the Holmes stories, along with their characters, were in the public domain in that country, in the Doyle estate legally challenged the use of Sherlock Holmes in the film Enola Holmes in a complaint filed in the United States.

Necessary Necessary. It is essentially a rewrite of the American chapters of A Study in Scarlet , with the London action moving to San Francisco.

Holmes is not present, but Watson is, in a very different form. He acts discreditably and even marries another woman. The publication of this play was at first suppressed, Doyle's biographer, John Dickson Carr stated that it would do no good for the public to read this, a view that Haining endorses readily.

The original Sherlock Holmes play written by Arthur Conan Doyle and William Gillette had a successful run of over 30 years. It has many original parts which are not found in the short stories but borrows many events from the canonical adventures, namely " A Scandal in Bohemia " and " The Adventure of the Final Problem ".

Also, it had elements from A Study in Scarlet , The Sign of the Four , " The Boscombe Valley Mystery ", " The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter ", and " The Adventure of the Naval Treaty ".

It includes the very first mention of the phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson". Doyle and Gillette later revised the play together; it has since been revised by others twice.

Around , Doyle wrote and produced a play based on his short story " The Adventure of the Speckled Band ".

Saintsbury as Sherlock Holmes and Lyn Harding as Dr. Grimesby Roylott. The play, originally entitled The Stonor Case , differs from the story in several small details, such as the names of some of the characters [15] and the timeline is also changed.

Holmes mentions Mary Morstan, who had already proposed Dr. Watson, twice and Charles Augustus Milverton also appears as a character.

Some claim that the play originally appeared in an early draft of "Sherlock Holmes" above and was later removed, with some elements finding their way into " The Adventure of the Empty House " before the entire play was resurrected, some years later, into "The Crown Diamond" and "The Mazarin Stone.

Arthur Conan Doyle rarely gave interviews or publicly discussed his character. However, the following is a list of Doyle essays on his character which are currently in publication, either in Green or Haining's book or in standard editions of the Complete Stories :.

Guiterman first published his homage in America in Life 5 December and then in London Opinion 14 December , and in his collection The Laughing Muse.

Doyle's answer appeared in the 26 December issue of London Opinion and was reprinted in the memoir of the editor of London Opinion , Lincoln Springfield.

The late Dean Dickensheet appears to be the first to print the poems together, in An 'Undiscerning Critic' Discerned. This essay was featured in the Strand Magazine as a Christmas treat to its readers.

It talks of the way Holmes had caught the public imagination and Doyle's view on his character. An essay from Collier's Weekly , in which Doyle explains exactly where Holmes came from.

It contains, at the end, J. Barrie's "The Adventure of the Two Collaborators". This appeared in The Strand Magazine to introduce a competition to name the best Sherlock Holmes adventures.

The same essay, with two paragraphs cut, appears as the preface to The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. This is the sequel to the article mentioned above.

In it, Doyle listed what he thought were the best Holmes adventures. He noted that had he been able to include stories from The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes he would certainly have included " The Adventure of the Lion's Mane " and " The Adventure of the Illustrious Client ".

Richard Lancelyn Green's The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes also includes five prefaces to the various editions of Sherlock Holmes stories and novels, Doyle's speech at the Stoll Convention Dinner , some chapters from Doyle's autobiography Memoirs and Adventures , and several interviews.

These are works which have in the past been thought to have been written by Doyle. Some have been conclusively proved to have no Doyle input, the composition of others still remains unclear.

The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes , is a collection of stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle's son Adrian Conan Doyle and Arthur's biographer, novelist John Dickson Carr.

The stories are generally extrapolations of cases briefly mentioned in the canonical work, but tend to contradict themselves and each other. They are generally considered Sherlock Holmes pastiches.

This mystery, a completed Sherlock Holmes story, was found in by a Doyle biographer, Hesketh Pearson, searching through a box of Doyle's papers.
